Bidar Sultanate

The Sultanate of Bidar was one of the five central Indian Deccan sultanates, which emerged from the Bahmani Sultanate. It was founded in 1492 and existed until the submission by the Sultanate of Bijapur in 1619. It is named after the capital of Bidar in present-day Indian state of Karnataka.

History

The city of Bidar was the capital of the Bahmani Sultanate since the 1420s. Qasim Barid Shah fell in 1492 the Bahmani Sultan Mahmud Shah IV, thus founding the dynasty of the Barid Shahi. Nominally still ruled the Bahmaniden, the Barid Shahi, however, the only rule served as a pretext and a means of pressuring the others emerged from the Bahmani kingdom of the Deccan sultanates. 1527 also ended the nominal rule of the Bahmaniden. As a result, Bidar lost a large part of its territory to neighboring countries. In 1565 it participated in alliance with Bijapur, Golkonda, Ahmadnagar at the Battle of Talikota against the South Indian Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar, which suffered a crushing defeat. The independence Bidars ended in 1619 with the conquest of Bijapur.
