Bié Plateau

The highlands of Bié (or Bihe ) is located in the heart of Angola (Africa). It extends up to 2,619 m high.

Geography

In the north the highlands turns into the low- threshold Guinea and the North East in the Congo Basin. More in the east than in the north-east it merges almost seamlessly with the Lundaschwelle; in the east it falls but also to quite extensive valley of the Zambezi from back. In the southeast, it passes into the Okavangobecken and to the south the Ovamboland connects. In the southwest of the Bié Highlands ( Chela da Serra ) goes over into the 2,275 m high Shelagebirge. In the west it falls on the Atlantic coast to the narrow lowlands.

The Bié Highlands, which accounts for most of Angola's Lunda together with the high country is mountainous in the country's center; to the south it falls off gradually and is structured flat there. The highest elevation of Bié - Highlands is the Moco with 2,619 m.

Main rivers

From about the center of the Bié Highlands run numerous small and large rivers radiate in many directions:

  • Kwanza ( Kuanza ) - to the northwest
  • To the east of the Zambezi river which flows from the north, south past
  • Cuando ( Kuando ) - towards the southeast
  • Cubango - Okavango - in the south / southeast
  • Kunene ( Cunene ) - in south-west
  • Kassai - to the east
  • In the west ( Atlantic) flow only small rivers
