Biezwil

Biezwil is a municipality in the district of Bucheggberg the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Biezwil is located on 586 m above sea level. Level, 14 km south-west of the main town Canton Solothurn ( straight line ). The scattered village extends in a depression in the catchment area of ​​Rütibachs on the plateau of Bucheggbergs, in the Solothurn Plateau.

The area of ​​4.2 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Molassehöhen of Bucheggberg. Population

With 323 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Biezwil one of the small communities of the Canton of Solothurn. Of the residents, 98.3 % speak German, 1.4% French-speaking and 0.4 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Biezwil amounted in 1850 to 579 residents in 1900 to 376 inhabitants. Through strong migration during the 20th century, the population increased to 1980 by a further 40 % to 226 persons. Since then, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy

Biezwil was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. During the 19th century was in Biezwil a significant Garnsiederei, which attracted many workers from the area, who had settled in the village.

History

The territory of Biezwil been inhabited since the Neolithic period and during the Roman period, which could be detected by various small finds. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1255 under the name Beizwile; by 1276 the name Bietzwile is preserved. The place name is derived from the Old High German personal name piezo and means in the courts of the piezo.

Since the 13th century Biezwil was under the rule Buchegg that was part of the land County Small Burgundy, acquired in 1391 from Solothurn and was converted to the Bailiwick Bucheggberg. Until 1798, the high court was the Bernese district court Zollikofen while Solothurn with the Schnottwil of court exercised the lower courts. After the collapse of the ancien régime (1798 ) Biezwil belonged during the Helvetic Republic to the district Biberist and from 1803 to the District Bucheggberg. In 1893, numerous houses were a village destroyed by fire.
