Big Five (orchestras)
As Big Five, the five best-known and respected as the best symphony orchestra in the USA are called.
These orchestras are (in brackets the date of incorporation):
- New York Philharmonic (1842 )
- Boston Symphony Orchestra (1881 )
- Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1891 )
- Philadelphia Orchestra (1900)
- Cleveland Orchestra (1918 )
The term Big Five is partially considered obsolete, as many other symphony orchestras of the United States - both in the South and in the West - have now caught up with the quality of the five "big". Which orchestra, however, should belong to a list of Big Ten or Big Twenty -Five, is controversial.
