Big Horn County (Montana)

Big Horn County is a county located in the state of Montana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hardin, which is the largest and most important city in the county at the same time.

Geography

The County is located in southern Montana, on the south by Wyoming, is to the East and about 100 km from Nebraska and borders in Montana clockwise to the County Carbon County, Yellowstone County, Treasure County, Rosebud County and Powder River County. The total area is 12,988 km ²

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,671 people in the county. There were 3,924 households and 3,033 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.60 % White, 0.04 % African American, 59.66 % Native American, 0.22 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.68 % from other races groups; 2.79% were descended from two or more races. 3.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,924 households out of which 42.40 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.00 % were married couples living together, 17.60 % had a female householder with no husband. 22.70% were non-families. 19.30 % of all households and 6.70% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.17 and the average family size was 3.66 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 35.80 % under the age of 18, 8.60 % from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44 years, 20.50% between 45 and 64 years and 8.60 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 97.30 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.00 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,684, and the median income for a family was $ 31,095. Males have a median income of $ 23,814, women $ 18,884. The per capita income was $ 10,792. 29.20 % of the population and 23.70 % of families are below the poverty line. 37.00 % of those under age 18 and 20.10% were 65 years or older.
