The nuclear power station Big Rock Point (English Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant) is a decommissioned nuclear power plant in Charlevoix (Michigan). The boiling water reactor was built by General Electric and had a net electrical capacity of 67 MW. It was in operation from 1962 to 1997.

History

Big Rock Point was the first nuclear power plant in Michigan. In the reactor also 60Co for the medical industry has been established.

On January 7, 1971, the B- 52 bomber crashed on a training flight with live bombs - loading near the power plant. With the crash in Lake Michigan all 9 crew members died.

Closure and decommissioning

The power plant was shut down at 10:33 clock (EST ) before the expiry of the operating license in 2000 on 29 August 1997.

The approximately 107 -ton reactor was shipped to Barnwell on October 7, 2003.

The rest of the nuclear power plant was demolished. Up to eight containers with spent fuel nothing more reminiscent of the former power plant, is responsible for the nuclear waste became the new owner of the site Entergy as part of the purchase of the Palisades nuclear power plant. The cost of decommissioning and demolition of the power plant amounted to 390 million U.S. dollars.
