Big Spring is the district capital ( county seat ) of the Howard County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in west-central Texas, about 100 miles from New Mexico away, at the intersection of U.S. Highways 87 and Interstate 20 and is located about halfway between Dallas and El Paso. It has a total area of 49.7 km ², of which 0.2 km ² water surface.

History

The city was named after the source of Big Spring in West Texas. As in 1882, Howard County was founded, was chosen as the county seat of Big Spring management and in the same year, the first post office was opened. 1884, the city had already 1200 inhabitants, six saloons, four general stores and a weekly magazine, the Pantagraph. In 1890, there were several private schools and in 1898 the first public school was opened. 1905 Opera House was opened in 1914 and the town had a hotel, three banks and five churches of various denominations. In 1926 the first oil well in the region was found, which gave the city a new growth spurt.
