Bill Aitken (politician)

Bill Aitken ( born April 15, 1947 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party.

Aitken attended Allan Glen 's School in Glasgow and then worked in insurance. Between 1976 and 1996, Aitken Conservative Councillor from Glasgow, while from 1980 to 1984 and from 1992 to 1996 leader of the opposition. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Glasgow in 1993.

In the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 Aitken candidate for the constituency of Glasgow Anniesland, but could not prevail against the later First Minister Donald Dewar of the Labour Party as well as the candidate of the SNP itself. On the basis of the election results Aitken received but the only mandate of the regional election list for the Conservative Party in the election Glasgow Area and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament. In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 he was a candidate each for Glasgow Anniesland, but could in both cases, only the third highest number of votes recorded for itself. He drew back as each list candidate of the constituency in parliament. 2010 Aitken reported not to stand at the next general election. Aitken's successor to the first rank of the Regional Evaluation of Glasgow was Ruth Davidson.
