Bill Barber (musician)

John William " Bill" Barber ( born May 21, 1920 in Hornell, New York, † 18 June 2007 in Bronxville, New York) was an American tuba player.

He gained fame through its participation in the Birth of the Cool sessions of the Miles Davis Capitol band and the projects of Miles and the band leader / arranger Gil Evans.

Life and work

Barber studied at New York's Manhattan and Juilliard School of Music. In the second half of the 1940s he played, among others, in the bands of Charlie Ventura and Claude Thornhill, in the 1950s in the Sauter - Finegan Orchestra and worked with Pete Rugolo, then with Gil Evans. In the orchestra, he participated in projects with trumpeter Miles Davis in part, such as Miles Ahead 1957 Porgy And Bess 1958 Sketches of Spain 1960 Live At Carnegie Hall 1961, Quiet Nights 1962. In the bands of Gil Evans, he played as a set musician with whose groundbreaking panels Great Jazz Standards 1959, Out of the Cool 1960 and The Individualism of Gil Evans (1963 /64) with. After that he took part in recordings by Ralph Burns and Urbie Green part ( Music for Brass ).
