Bill Beaumont

William " Bill" Blackledge Beaumont OBE ( born March 9, 1952 in Preston ) is an English former rugby union player. He played as a second row forward for the English national team, the British and Irish Lions and the Fylde Rugby Club.

Beaumont was in 1975 made ​​his debut for England against Ireland. In the same year he traveled with the national team to Australia. In 1977, he was considered for the first time for a tour of the Lions. He came in two games against the All Blacks for use, including the only victory of the selection.

1978 inherited Beaumont Roger Uttley as captain of the England selection. The greatest success under his leadership was the Grand Slam in the Five Nations in 1980. During the same year he was also appointed captain of the Lions, the series against South Africa lost 3-0.

Beaumont's career ended in 1982 after an injury. After the end of his playing career, he worked for the quiz show A Question of Sport at the BBC and directed the family textile company Bill Beaumont Textiles. Since 1999 he has represented England at the World Association of IRB. He is also Chairman of the Wooden Spoon organization. In 2005 he was again during a Lions tour active, this time as team manager.

Beaumont is a member of the International Rugby Hall of Fame and has been wearing the 2008 Officer of the Order of the British Empire. According to him, the trophy is named in order to be played in the English counties annually.
