Bill Charlap

Bill Charlap (* October 15, 1966 in New York; Complete name William Morrison Charlap ) is an American jazz pianist.

Life and work

Bill Charlap began at the age of three years to play the piano. He comes from a musical family; His mother, Sandy Stewart, is a singer and his father was Broadway composer Morrison "Moose" Charlap. Charlap took later with his mother on the duet album "Love Is Here To Stay ".

Later, he studied classical music, but remained connected to jazz. He worked at the beginning of his professional career with Gerry Mulligan, Benny Carter, Tony Bennett and others. In 1995 he became a member of Phil Woods' quintet. He then formed his own bands, which first albums produced on Criss Cross Jazz and chiaroscuro under his own name. In the 1990s, Charlap formed a piano trio, the bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington belonged, and also appeared in the New York jazz club the Village Vanguard. He took a total of six albums as a leader for the Blue Note label, as the two Grammy nominated CDs Somewhere, ( which deals with music by Leonard Bernstein ) and The Bill Charlap Trio, Live at the Village Vanguard. In 2002, for Blue Note with guests Frank Wess, Shirley Horn and Tony Bennett was the album Stardust. Under the name New York Trio ( with bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Bill Stewart) took Charlap since 2001 several albums ( which appeared only in Japan). 2013 he has been working with a nonet in the style of Birth of the Cool, composed of Frank Wess, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jeremy Pelt and the singer Mary Stallings.

Bill Charlap also works since 2004, when he replaced Dick Hyman as Artistic Director of New York 's 92nd Street program > Jazz in July ' and the singer Mary Cleere Haran. He is married to the Canadian jazz pianist Renee Rosnes since 2007.
