Mississippi River

The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Mississippi River between Cape Girardeau and East Cape Girardeau in the U.S. states of Missouri and Illinois.

Over the bridge leads from the west, the Missouri State Route 34, which passes on the bridge in the Illinois State Route 146. The four lanes are used daily by more than 10,000 vehicles.

History

The bridge was a few meters south of the original Cape Girardeau Bridge built. This was from 1928 until its demolition in 2004.

1996 began the construction of the new bridge. It was named after Bill Emerson (1938-1996), who represented 1981-1996 the state of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives.
