Bill Owens (congressman)

William Lewis " Bill" Owens ( born January 20, 1949 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. Since 2009 he is a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 23th Congressional District of the State of New York.

Biography

Bill Owens was born the son of Lewis Owens and Alice Stanton Owens in New York City. After graduating from high school at Chaminade High School in Mineola, he served in the United States Air Force, last ( comparable to a captain in Germany ) as Captain. With a degree in management, he joined in 1971 with summa cum laude from Manhattan College from. In 1974, he finally graduated from Fordham University. Before he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, he worked as a lawyer and consultant.

He was elected to succeed John M. McHugh, who was appointed as Secretary of State of the United States Army, in a Special Election to the House of Representatives. His seat he could defend in the 2010 elections extremely close with 48.2 % of votes. In the House he is a member of the Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Homeland Security.

With his wife, Jane, he lives in Plattsburgh. He has 3 children and 4 grandchildren and is Roman Catholic faith.
