Billie Poole

Lucille "Billie " Poole ( born March 21, 1929 in Edwardsville (Illinois ), † 21 May 2005 ) was an American jazz and blues singer.

Life and work

Poole moved with her family in 1943 to California, where she founded choirs, with whom she performed at San Francisco on the radio and at numerous concerts. In 1954 she went to France, where she appeared in the film Les héros sont fatigues. She also sang spirituals and jazz. In 1959 she took in Paris with Art Simmons; about this recording Clark Terry, Elek Bacsik, Michel Gaudry and Kenny Clarke were involved. On 30 August 1961, she joined heard and seen live on (as well as Eric Dolphy ) Joachim Ernst Berendt's mission in jazz; in the same year, she made a guest appearance in Cologne, following which the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band should accompany them. For family reasons, remained under this recording because Poole had to return to the United States. Two albums followed in the 1960s for Riverside. In France, she appeared from 1968 to 1969 also with Memphis Slim. In her last years she sang in the by her sister Betty Gadling led Allen Temple Baptist Church Mass Choir ( hand in hand ).
