Billy Backus

Howard William Backus called, Billy Backus, ( born March 5, 1943 in Canastota, United States) is a former welterweight boxing champion. He is the nephew of Carmen Basilio.

Important battles

On December 3, 1970 Billy Backus won the WBA and WBC welterweight belt against Jose Angel Napoles, the fight ended in the 4th round technical knockout On January 23, 1971, he defended his title against Bobby Williams. Backus won on points over 10 rounds.

On March 15, 1971 he succeeded his second title defense against Robert Gallois, the fight went on the full 10 rounds. In his third title defense, on 4 June 1971 he had to admit defeat Jose Angel Napoles. The fight was stopped in the eighth round.

His last fight Backus denied on May 20, 1978 against the then WBA champion Pipino Cuevas, however, he lost in the second round by TKO.
