Billy Bauer

William H. "Billy" Bauer ( born November 14, 1915 in New York City; † 17 June 2005 in Melville, New York ) was an American jazz guitarist.

Life

First farmer took lessons on the banjo, the guitar playing was based on Allan Reuss and began in 1939 with Jerry Wald. Between 1944 and 1946 he played in Woody Herman's First Herd, with Neal Hefti, Charlie Ventura and the band of Chubby Jackson ( 1947). Between 1946 and 1949 he was a member of the ensemble of Lennie Tristano and was involved in the legendary recordings of May 1949 Capitol Records ( Cross Currents ).

Bauer was one of the few guitarists of the time, which avoided the elastic phrasing of Charlie Christian, but a metallic sound preferred. Later he played with JJ Johnson and Kai Winding (1954 ), Bobby Hackett and Jack Teagarden (1957 ) or Cootie Williams and Rex Stewart (1957 ) and Benny Goodman (1958), but again with Tristano and Lee Konitz. 1956 was his only album under his own name, Plectrist. In 1997, he is the last time occurred in public. Essentially, Bauer worked as a music teacher and studio musician. He owned a music publishing.

His duets with Konitz 1950 ( "Rebecca" ) were the model for the duo of Albert Mangelsdorff and Attila Zoller.
