Billy Bingham

Billy Bingham, MBE (* August 5, 1931 in Belfast ) is a former Northern Irish football player and football coach.

Billy Bingham was an active soccer player dribbling a right-winger, who began his career in his hometown at Glentoran Belfast and 1950 to England moved to FC Sunderland. In 1957 he qualified with the Northern Ireland national football team for FIFA World Cup 1958 in Sweden, where he met in the preliminary round Group 1 World Champion Germany. His team failed in the quarterfinals with a 0-4 to France.

After the World Cup tournament, he moved to Luton Town. With Luton Town in 1959 he reached the FA Cup Final. His greatest success as a club player he reached in 1963 with Everton when he was English Champion. After the championship season, he moved to Port Vale, where he ended his career after a broken leg in 1964.

After his playing career, Bingham began to work as a coach. In 1967 he took over as coach for the first time, the Northern Ireland national team and coached the same time as the English club Plymouth Argyle. In 1971 he took over for two years as coach, the Greek national football team. In 1973, he came as a coach to his former master club Everton, but where he could produce only average performance. In January 1977, he was discharged and remained until 1980 without a coach site. Then he again took over the Northern Irish national team and reached the same the second qualification of the Northern Irishman for a World Cup tournament in 1958 and qualified for the FIFA World Cup 1982 in Spain. He led the fight strong team in the second final round, where France again was too strong for a Northern Irish team. Bingham was the most successful coach in Northern Ireland at all, as he also led the team for the Football World Cup 1986 in Mexico. Here, however, the team failed in the preliminary round. Billy Bingham remained until 1994 national coach of Northern Ireland and then retired from coaching.
