Billy Williams (cinematographer)

Billy Williams, OBE ( born June 3, 1929 in Walthamstow ) is a British cinematographer.

Life

Williams trained as a cameraman with his father, whose name was also Billy and camera man. During his military service with the Royal Air Force, he worked as a photographer. Upon completion of military service, he worked as a cameraman for industrial films, including in Iraq for the Iraq Petroleum Company. In the 1960s he worked as a commercial director and learned Ken Russell and John Schlesinger know. In 1965 he directed his first feature film as a cameraman and turned in 1967 with Ken Russell The Billion Dollar Brain. For another Ken Russell film Women in Love in 1971, he received his first Oscar nomination. A second followed in 1982 for Mark Rydell's On Golden Pond. This film was the last film by Henry Fonda. He finally won an Oscar in 1983 for Richard Attenborough's biographical epic Gandhi.

Williams ended his career as a cameraman in 1996. Overall, he had been involved in more than 40 productions. In 2000, was honored at the festival for Camera Art CamerImage for his life's work. In 2001 he received the International Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers. In 2009 he was appointed Officer of the British Empire ( OBE).
