Binghamton Whalers

The Binghamton Whalers were an American ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League in Binghamton, New York. The venue for the Whalers was the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

History

The Binghamton Whalers were established in 1980 as a farm team of the Hartford Whalers. They were the successors of the Binghamton Dusters, which played from 1977 to 1980 in the American Hockey League. Greatest success in the ten years of its existence was reaching the finals of the Calder Cup, in which one 1981/82 was defeated in the best- of-seven series with the New Brunswick Hawks 1:4 for the Whalers. The 1989/90 season in which the team won only eleven of the 80 season games, with 31 points was the worst season of AHL - team of all time. For this reason, the Hartford Whalers decided to use the Springfield Indians as a new farm team. Seven players from the last season of AHL Binghamton Whalers were also transferred to Springfield and won the Calder Cup the following year. After the Hartford Whalers got out of the franchise, this was renamed in 1990 in Binghamton Rangers.
