Binningen, Switzerland

Binningen (Basel German: Binnige ) is a municipality in the district of Arlesheim in the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland.

Geography

Binningen located in Leimental to 292 m asl and is the last village on the river Birsig before it flows into the Rhine in Basel. Its neighboring municipalities are in the south Bottmingen, in the southwest Oberwil, in the west and to the north and east of Allschwil the city of Basel. Binningen has a close contact with the city and is a popular residential area. The area of the municipality is 4.43 km ², of which 68% are settlements, 23% of agricultural areas and 9 % forest.

The municipal coat of arms dates back to a 1292 to 1300 attested Family Crest Basler family " of Binningen», which was acquired in 1921 by the community.

History

The name of the village appeared between the 11th and the 14th century in different variations, eg as " Binnengin » or as « Biningin ". In 2004 Binningen the oldest surviving mention of the name celebrated in a document from the year 1004 with a big party under the motto: " Botz 1000".

Population

33 % of the population are reformed and 27 % Roman Catholic. The proportion of foreigners is 20.4 %.

Culture

The art exhibition Arte- Binningen there since 1992. It takes place every fall and has evolved from locally influenced beginnings to an exhibition with international participation and thematic exhibitions.

Sports

Sport is quite large in the community. The indoor pool mirror box is a meeting place for young and old and offers normal swimming numerous other sports. Many clubs offer sports facilities. The SC Binningen is probably the most famous football club of the Leimen. The Handball Club HB Blue Boys Binningen belongs together with partner associations from Oberwil and Therwil of the biggest clubs in the north-western Switzerland. Under the label HSG Leimental the inter-regional teams are listed. The athletics team Binningen offer high-quality training.
