Bioče derailment

In the railway accident Bioče on 23 January 2006 derailed a train of the Montenegrin rail on the railway line Belgrade - Bar at Bioče in Montenegro for speeding after failure of the braking system. 45 people died.

Starting position

A four-part series 412 railcars of the Montenegrin railway had problems with its brakes. Nevertheless, he was employed as a local train from Bijelo Polje to Bar. [Note 1] He carried about 300 passengers in case of accident ride. Even 700 yards from the scene of the accident, it was the engineer possible to brake properly.

The railway line runs below the railway station Bioče on a downhill twisty through a series of tunnels.

The accident

The train accelerated to 16 clock in a downhill uncontrollably and broke with 139 km / h instead of permitted 60 km / h from a bow at the end of a tunnel. The train derailed at here about 100 feet deep gorge of Morača, in which then collapsed part of the train. [Note 2] result of the official investigation was that the brakes had failed.

45 people died, 184 were also injured. This was the worst rail accident that had ever happened in Montenegro. The salvage operations were hampered by difficult access terrain, strong winds and blowing snow.

The engineer was taken on suspicion of negligent homicide in custody. He was aware that the brakes had a technical defect. He again claimed to have reported without a repair had been made. On 23 July 2006, the Podgorica prosecutor brought charges against twelve employees of the railroad. All except the engineer were acquitted. This was sentenced to a prison term of six years. The public opinion judged the judgment as a maneuver to divert attention from the structural deficits of the Montenegrin railway.

The accident led to the resignation of Transport Minister Andrija Lompar and the Director of the railway, Ranko Medenica, on the evening of the accident day.
