Bioggio

Church of San Maurizio

Bioggio is a municipality in the district of Agno, in the Malcantone region in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Geography

Bioggio located in the south horseback- and in the plain of the River Vedeggio, 2 kilometers southwest of Lugano, whose agglomeration, the municipality is. Bioggio consists of the villages Bioggio, Bosco Luganese, Cimo and Iseo and numerous small hamlets.

History

The first mention of Bioggio dated from 1335 as Biegio. In 1992, during excavations the remains of a Roman building dating from the 3rd century, which was probably used as a thermal bath, discovered. In the Middle Ages the noble families of Lugano and Como were wealthy in Bioggio. From 1960 to the east was the Vedeggio an industrial zone, now part of the agglomeration of Lugano. On April 4, 2004 the old church Bioggio was merged with the previously independent municipalities Bosco Luganese and Cimo. The new larger municipality took the name Bioggio. On 20 April 2008, the municipality of Iseo has been integrated into the community Bioggio.

Traffic

Through the village the main road leading from Manno and from Lugano to Ponte Tresa. To the public transport network, the community is connected by two stops of the narrow-gauge railway from Lugano to Ponte Tresa. A part of the airport Agno -Lugano is located in the municipality.
