Biological Society of Washington

The Biological Society of Washington, is a worldwide organization of scientists, which was established on 3 December 1880. Their original purpose was to " promote the study of the biological sciences and the holding of forums can be presented and discussed in the scientific article". Today, it serves to promote systematic studies and the dissemination of taxonomic knowledge. In May 1882 The first issue of the peer-reviewed scientific journal Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington was published, which is published quarterly since. Another journal, the Bulletin of the Biological Society of Washington, which published larger studies, symposium reports, and special studies collections since 1918 at irregular intervals. 1898 was one of the Biological Society of Washington to the eight founding organizations of the Washington Academy of Sciences. The executive committee includes elected officials and selected members. As the first president George Brown Goode and was elected as the first Secretary Richard Rathbun. Later presidents were, among others, Frederick Vernon Coville, Edward William Nelson, Edward Alphonso Goldman, Clinton Hart Merriam, William Healey Dall and Paul Bartsch.

The Biological Society of Washington has about 250 members, including a number of employees of the Smithsonian Institution, the United States National Museum and the Agriculture and the Interior Ministry.
