It was opened in 1908 by an association of people with the aim of creating a corporation that would establish a place which should be used by an exhibition of rare exotic species of general entertainment. In contrast to other zoos at the time, who worked mainly on scientific principles, here was pure entertainment and amusement of the people of the target. The zoo had an area of 12 acres and was built in the northern part of the site of the Villa Borghese; It was opened with great success on 5 January 1911 in the presence of the then ruling mayor of Rome Nathan.

Founder time

The zoo was designed completely by Carl Hagenbeck, a respected animal dealer who had just opened his famous Zoo Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg- Stellingen. The park was built to the same aspects as in the Hanseatic city, that is, trenches instead of grids and spacious green areas. The zoo has been accepted by the people with great interest.

This initial success, however, was not to last. Attempts have been made to equip the park with a particularly rare and exotic animals. Various park expansions were undertaken and in 1926 a further expansion in the direction of the adjacent deer park was planned. 1933 began, the architect Raffaele De Vico on with his work in the new areas, which would include two main attractions: the large aviary and the reptile house was opened in 1935.

After the Second World War

Also, during and after the war it was very precarious for Zooleitung and the gradual decay of the animal park was becoming clear, although many areas restored and others were completely rebuilt. 1970 had to be temporarily closed due to his ailing state, the reptile house. His redesign took about nine years, after it was opened in 1983.
