Bipyridine

Under bipyridines one combines a group of organic compounds together. As a common structuring element they have two pyridine rings, which are directly linked to each other. Since there are at each pyridine molecule three different linkage positions exist for the formation of the skeleton six possible isomers. The isomers of 2,2 ' -, 3,3' - and 4,4 '-bipyridine are formally constructed symmetrically, 2,3' -, 2,4 ' - and 3,4' -bipyridine asymmetric. 2,2 '- and 4,4 '- bipyridine have gained importance as ligands in coordination chemistry.
