Bir Moghrein

Bir Moghrein, Arabic بير مغرين, DMG Bīr Muġrain, French spelling Bir Moghrein, is a remote desert settlement in the administrative region Tiris Zemmour in the extreme northern Mauritania. Until the independence of the country from the French colonial era in 1960 the place was called Fort trinquet.

Bir Moghrein is located about 400 kilometers north of F'dérik and Zouérate and about 50 kilometers east of the drawn with a ruler border with the Western Sahara. A little oasis in the Sahara lies at an altitude of 366 meters and is surrounded by a wide sandy plain, protrude from the individual rock mountains and are sunk into the numerous crater-like depressions ( Guelbs ). A seldom -used dirt road leads to the northeast next to the Algerian oasis town of Tindouf, another 900 km to the east to the oasis Chegga in the triangle Mauritania - Algeria - Mali,

How F'dérik ( formerly Fort Gouroud ) Bir Moghrein was founded as a French military post on the border of the colonial empire in the early 20th century. In the Western Sahara conflict Bir Moghrein was in the combat zone between Mauritanian troops and Polisario.

In the 2000 census, the population was 2761st The simple flat houses are within the Mauritanian military unit stationed in the village. There is an airfield with a paved runway without public transport operations ( ICAO: GQPT, no IATA code ).
