Bird Iceland (Spanish Isla Pajaro ) is an island of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic and is situated 4.5 km south of West Falkland. She is since 1996 a nature reserve of falkländischen government.

Geography

Bird Iceland is a small island with an area of ​​about 120 ha, its shores are mostly steep cliffs that are up to 70 m high in the western half of the south coast. A landing by boat is possible only in a bay in the northeast. In the middle of the island there is a large seasonal pond.

Flora and Fauna

The vegetation is sparse and dominated by tussock grass. Total of twelve kinds of flowering plants have been found.

Bird Iceland but it is an important breeding area for nesting seabirds. Overall, this breed more than 10,000 pairs of 25 species, which is why the island by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area ( FK03 ) is reported. Particularly common are the Black-, the rockhopper and the Belcher 's Petrel. With a population of 10,000 animals located in the southeast of the island's largest colony of South African fur seals in the Falkland Islands.
