Bird Segle McGuire

Bird Sail McGuire ( born October 13, 1865 in Belleville, Illinois, † November 9, 1930 in Tulsa, Oklahoma ) was an American politician. Between 1903 and 1907 he represented the last delegate to the Oklahoma Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives; 1907-1915 he was a regular congressman of the state of Oklahoma.

Early years

In 1867, Bird McGuire came with his parents in the Randolph County, Missouri. There he attended the public schools. In 1881 he moved to the Chautauqua County in Kansas and then into the Indian Territory, where he raised cattle. At the same time, he attended the State Normal School in Emporia. At times, he also worked as a teacher.

After studying law at the University of Kansas and his 1889 was admitted as a lawyer McGuire began to work in his new profession. Between 1890 and 1894 he was district attorney in Chautauqua County. In 1894 he moved to the Pawnee County, Oklahoma Territory, where he worked as an attorney in Pawnee. In 1897 he was appointed United States Attorney for the Oklahoma Territory.

Political career

McGuire was a member of the Republican Party. In 1902 he was elected delegates in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he replaced Dennis Thomas Flynn on March 4, 1903. After a re-election in 1904, he was able to exercise this mandate until March 3, 1907. He was the last Congress Delegates of the Oklahoma territory, which was then dissolved.

After the accession of Oklahoma to the United States McGuire was elected in the first midterm elections of the new state as a deputy in the Congress. After several re- elections he could exercise his new mandate between 16 November 1907 to 3 March 1915. In contrast to its former status as a delegate he now had full voting rights. At times he was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Ministry of Interior. In the 1915 elections McGuire did not run for another term. In the following years he worked as a lawyer in Tulsa and business near Bartlesville a ranch.
