BirdLife International is an international organization for the protection of birds, their habitats and global biodiversity conservation based in Cambridge.

History

The organization was founded in 1922 by the ornithologist Thomas Gilbert Pearson and Jean Theodore Delacour under the name International Committee for Bird Protection; In 1928 she was renamed as the International Council for Bird Preservation. After the Second World War, the interest group disbanded. In the 1960s it was called the International Council for Bird Preservation ( ICBP, German International Council for the Protection of Birds). In 1983 she was after the appointment of a professional director active again in 1994 they renamed themselves in BirdLife International. Today it is one of the most respected organizations of the international nature conservation. It is official partner of the IUCN.

Organization

BirdLife acts as a network of national partner organizations (NGOs). In addition to the global secretariat in Cambridge there are regional BirdLife secretariats in all continents. The European Secretariat is based in Brussels, from where the lobbying is coordinated in Brussels and Strasbourg. Some conditions must comply with the national BirdLife Partner as democratic organizational structures, government independence, clear bird conservation programs, appropriate to the objectives of BirdLife ethical orientation, a functioning management of finances and others.

  • The Austrian BirdLife Austria,
  • The Swiss the Swiss Birds (SVS ).

The Honorary President of BirdLife International is Princess Takamado; previously it was Queen Noor of Jordan.

Agendas

The motto of BirdLife International is: Working together for birds and people. The goal is a sustainable use of natural resources.

BirdLife International is responsible for the Red List of endangered species of birds. It also leads the worldwide list of Important Bird Areas (1979 originated as an extension of the EC Birds Directive, which are also a criterion for further European bird sanctuaries BSG / SPA), and the list of Endemic Bird Areas ( EBA) as a special category of endemic, unique species.

2007 called BirdLife International, a sponsor ( the so-called Species Champions ) for the globally most threatened bird species (currently 190) to life. Of these shall go as a signal for better protection of these species.
