It is the feminine form of Birger. The name means as much as helper, protector. Related forms are Birgid, Birte, Birthe, Birgitt, Birgitta and Bergit / Bergith. Contrary to popular belief, the name thus derives not from Brigitte and thus from the Celtic Brigid, but is actually Scandinavian origin.
