Biscayne-Nationalpark

The Biscayne National Park is located in South Florida and extends over the Biscayne Bay and the northernmost islands of the Florida Keys.

This is one of the most popular areas for diving and snorkeling in America. The park consists of 95 % water surface and protects the coral reef, which is a part of the reef system which extends over the entire southern coast of Florida. After the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the reef off the coast of Belize, it is the third largest in the world. The coastline of the park and the numerous islands harboring extensive mangrove forests.

The main attraction of the park represent the diving and snorkeling, it is also possible to rent kayaks or explore with glass bottom boats of the bay.

History

  • On October 18, 1968, the Biscayne National Monument was established.
  • On June 28, 1980, the monument was declared a national park.
