Bischwihr

Bischwihr ( German Bischweier ) is a municipality with 960 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in Alsace region of France. It belongs to the canton and the Communauté de communes Andolsheim du Pays du Ried Brun.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Upper Rhine Plain, approximately six kilometers east of Colmar. The direct neighboring villages are Fortschwihr, Holtzwihr, Wickerschwihr and Wihr -en- Plaine. Immediately east of the village runs the small river blind, which partly forms the border with Fortschwihr.

History

From the 12th century comes a first mention of the name " Bischoveswilre " - so to speak, of the hamlet of Bishop. At that time the village was under the rule of Horburger and 1324 went to the von Württemberg. At the Reformation Bischwihr became Lutheran in 1535. 1687 Alsace and thus Bischwihr by the German Reich was beaten to France, but remained until the French Revolution in the possession of Württemberg. The Peace of Augsburg was not in France, and so Catholicism was allowed back in the village.
