Bishōnen

The term Bishonen (Japanese美 少年, dt beautiful boy ) is the Japanese term for the ideal image of a beautiful young man, especially in manga and anime. The counterpart for women is called Bishojo.

Importance in the context of manga and anime

Bishōnen denotes a Japanese- designed beauty ideal, androgynous male character. Bishōnen occur particularly in the works of the shōjo genre, aimed at a female audience. This act also partly of homosexual relationships so they fit into the genre shōnen -ai or Yaoi.

Origin

Slim figure and feminine facial features are still common in Japan ideal of beauty for men, which arose from the fact that was played frequently in Japanese literature and art with reversed gender roles. Thus, the female roles are played by men and men over the roles of women in the Takarazuka theater groups in Kabuki.
