Bismarck is the capital of the U.S. state of North Dakota and the administrative district of Burleigh County. The city on the Missouri River is the second largest in the state. It is the seat of a Catholic diocese, and is an important trading center for wheat and cattle.

History

Before the white settlers reached the area around present-day Bismarck, Mandan tribe of Indians lived here. The city was founded in 1872 as Edwinton. The name goes back to Edwinton Edwin Ferry Johnson (1803-1872), a chief engineer of the railway company Northern Pacific Railway.

The modern name of Bismarck, which was introduced in 1873 by the Northern Pacific Railway, is derived from the then German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The idea was to honor the German chancellor, hoping to attract German immigrants to the city. To a wave of immigration occurred but only when in the vicinity ( Black Hills ) 1874 gold was found. In 1883 Bismarck capital of the Dakota Territory. In 1889, she eventually became the capital of the state of North Dakota.

The complex North Dakota State Capitol is located north of downtown Bismarck. Its central element is the 19-storey State Capitol in the style of Art Deco, which is the tallest building in North Dakota with its height of 74 meters.
