Bisphenol S (BPS) is a chemical compound from the group of bisphenols, wherein the central methylene group is replaced by a sulfonyl group.
Representation
Bisphenol S is represented by two equivalents of phenol and one equivalent of sulfuric acid.
This results in addition to 4,4 '- sulfonyldiphenol and the 4,2' - sulfonyldiphenol as a byproduct.
There are also reactions with other sulfonating agents in eg Chlorotoluenes described.
Use
Bisphenol S is used in polymer reactions ( for example in the production of polycarbonates ). It is also used as a component of epoxy resins and as an anti- corrosion agent, and electroplating excipient and as an intermediate for the production of flame retardants, thermal printing paper, and further.
Health hazards
The effects of bisphenol S on human health and the environment are tested under REACH in 2014 under substance evaluation of Belgium.
