Biston is a genus within the family of butterfly clamps ( Geometridae ).

Features

The European representative of the genus Biston are relatively large nocturnal moth with a wingspan of up to 55 millimeters. The species of polyphagous pronounced and can be found in various hardwoods and shrubs. The best known representative within the genus is the peppered moth ( Biston betularia ), have led to a number of publications which frequently occur in industrial areas melanistic forms.

The nocturnal caterpillars have the habit of a typical looper and are customized by shape and color of their habitat. The thickness of the poplar body tensioner ( Biston strataria ) collected in the resting position after a small branch by obliquely forward it stretches the crawler body ( mimesis ).

System

In Europe, the genus Biston is represented by three species. Previously the species Apocheima hispidaria, Lycia pomonaria, Lycia and Lycia zonaria hirtaria were combined in the genus Biston.

Worldwide currently includes 49 species in this genus.
