( Bis ( trifluoroacetoxy ) iodo ) benzene or phenyliodine (III) bis (trifluoroacetate ) (abbreviated PIFA ) is a hypervalent iodobenzene compound. It is used as a reagent in the Hofmann rearrangement in the production of amines from amides with loss of one carbon atom.
The reagent can also be used to make hydrazones of diazo compounds.
Production
As with all hypervalent iodobenzenes the starting compound is iodobenzene for the synthesis. PIFA is prepared by the reaction of iodobenzene with a mixture of trifluoroacetic acid and trifluoroperacetic acid.
