Bixin is a xanthophyll and carotenoid is extracted from annatto and is used as food and cosmetic colorant.

Extraction

Bixin can be obtained by removing the outer layer of the prepared seed of Annattostrauches ( Bixa orellana ) by grinding the seeds in cold water followed by extraction with solvents such as acetone, methanol or hexane. The resulting solution is acidified bixin, which is then filtered, dried and their back permanent precipitate is ground. This contains cis -and trans- bixin, the main dye cis- bixin. Alkaline liquor norbixin can be obtained as the corresponding salt. The use of genetically modified organisms for the production is also possible.

Use

Bixin is used as food and cosmetics dye, however, may be used as part of annatto only in certain foods.
