Bjarne Kallis

Johan Bjarne Kallis ( born March 21, 1945 in Kokkola ) is a former Finnish politician and from 1995 to 2004 Chairman of the Christian Democratic party (KD).

Study and career

Kallis completed a study of the social sciences, from which he graduated with a Master of Social Sciences in 1968. He then worked for a short time as a teacher and was from 1969 to 2003 lecturer at the Business Academy of Kokkola.

Political career

Kallis began his political career on 22 March 1991 with the election of deputies of the Reichstag. There he represents since the interests of the Finnish Christian Democrats (KD) the electoral district of Vaasa. During his parliamentary membership he was a member of various committees. 2007-2011 he was a member of the Finance Committee and alternate member of the Finnish delegation to the Nordic Council.

As early as 1991 he became chairman of the KD Group in the Reichstag. Subsequently, he was from 1995 to 2004 chairman of the party. On 22 March 2007 he was Group President again after the former parliamentary leader Sari Essayah had not been elected to the Reichstag.

In the presidential election on January 15, 2006 Kallis ran unsuccessfully against the incumbent Tarja Halonen for the office of President of the Republic of Finland. He reached a vote share of 2.0 %, which meant a sixth place among the eight candidates in the first ballot. 2011 renounced Kallis on a new Parliament candidacy and said goodbye to retire.
