Bjarni Herjólfsson

Bjarni Herjulfsson (also: Herjolfsson ) (c. 966 to Iceland ) is regarded as one of the possible discoverer of America. He was a son Herjólfr Bárðarsons. About him is reported in the Grænlendinga saga.

Life

Bjarni lived in Norway, but each spent a winter in Iceland and a winter in Norway. In the winter, where his father was relocated with Leif Eriksson Herjólfr to Greenland, followed Bjarni. In this cruise they were caught in mist and North Wind and disoriented. As the fog cleared, they found the compass again and still sailed a day and a night to the west. Then they saw forested hills. Bjarni sailed two days after the North, then they saw land again with forest. Again, they did not go on shore, but sailed three days after the southwest and reached an ice-covered island. They drove back out to sea. The direction is not given. After four more days they reached land again. It resembled that which Bjarni knew from her descriptions. Come ashore, they found the apartment of the father Herjólfr.

Later Bjarni sailed from Greenland to Norway to Ladejarl Erik Håkonsson and became his follower. The next summer he returned to Greenland. Leif Eiriksson, where he bought from a ship and looked at Vinland. Whether Bjarni was there, is doubtful. Because as Leif country looks, he says: "We have fared with the land other than Bjarni, who did not enter it. I will now give it a name: it is called Helluland "That does not sound like the presence Bjarni. . Also, that Leif buys him a ship to go to Vinland, speaks against that Bjarni is mitgefahren. It is also only of a ship with 35 crew talk. Bjarni is no longer mentioned in the source.
