Bjarni Jónsson

Bjarni Jónsson (* 1920) is an Icelandic mathematician who deals with logic, universal algebra and theory of associations.

He received his doctorate in 1946 with Alfred Tarski at the University of California, Berkeley ( Direct decomposition of finite algebraic systems). After that, he was at Brown University professor and at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Since 1966 he was a professor at Vanderbilt University. Since 1993 he is a professor emeritus.

Various mathematical concepts are named after him, as Jonsson - Tarski duality, Jonsson algebras and a type of large cardinal numbers ( Jonsson cardinal numbers ).

In 1991 he held the Tarski Lectures. In 1974 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Vancouver ( Varieties of algebras and Their congruence varieties ).

His doctoral Peter Fillmore heard.
