Bjärred

Bjärred is a locality ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Skåne County and the historical province Scania.

Etymology

The name of the located in the municipality of Lomma place is on record in 1813 for the first time as Bjered. Today's local name consists of the particular Scanian form bjär (English: mountain) and refers to a hill in the southern part of the town ( Gamla Bjärred ).

History

The settlement was founded in the late 19th century as a seaside resort for Lund. There used to be in place larger apple orchards, but today this area is built. 1899 began with the construction of an eleven- kilometer railway line to Lund. The course should be electrified from the start, but since it was not yet quite familiar with this new technology, it was decided for the time being for a traditional design. Thus, the train departed after the opening on 27 June 1901 and for the electrification of 1916 with steam locomotives. As it turned out, that the track earned no profits, the web was in 1939 shut down and dismantled the track a year later. Today only the former station building, which is now a cafe and a youth center are housed.

Football World Cup 1958

In the district Bjärreds Saltsjöbad was in a remote little family hotel accommodation of the German team for the football World Cup in 1958.

Attractions

From the beach of the village stands a 500 meter long jetty ( Långa Bryggan ) in the Sound. On it, a bath house and restaurant was built in 2003. The settlement is also known for the good view to Malmö, on the Öresund Bridge to and from Denmark.
