Björn Collinder

Erik Alfred Torbjörn " Björn " Collinder ( born July 22, 1894 in Sundsvall, † 20 May 1983 in Vienna) was a Swedish linguist and longtime professor of Finno-Ugric studies in Uppsala.

Life

Collinder licentiate was already in Nordic studies when he began to study Finnougristics. He became one of the most important disciple of Karl Bernhard Wiklund. In 1929 he acquired the Venia Legendi in finnougrischer Linguistics and Wiklunds was succeeded as professor at the University of Uppsala.

Creation

Collinder was an important representative of the Sami studies in Sweden. Its based in part on his own fieldwork to Lule, North and Südsamischen have contributed to better documentation and description of endangered languages ​​.

Special interest devoted Collinder historical linguistics. He examined, among other Germanic loanwords in Baltic-Finnic and Sami languages ​​.
