Bjørn Bjørnson

Bjørn Bjørnson (* November 15, 1859 in Christiania, Norway, UK, † April 14, 1942 in Oslo, Kingdom of Norway ) was a Norwegian actor, director, playwright and theater director.

Life

After an extensive theater training, which he enjoyed at the court theater at Meiningen especially at the Burgtheater in Vienna and from 1880 to 1882, the eldest son Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson returned to Oslo, where he worked as artistic director at Christiania Theater in 1884. Not least of his initiative, it was thanks to them that the new Nationaltheatret was built at Studenterlunden, near the palace in Oslo. From 1899 to 1907 he was its first director. Between 1923 and 1927 he took over the theater a second time.

Even as an actor Bjørnson was successful. Between 1899 and 1941 he held 143 rolls alone on Nationaltheatret. He shone especially in pieces of his father and in plays of Henrik Ibsen. In addition, Bjørnson was seen in several Scandinavian silent films.

Less well known is Bjørnson today as the author of several comedies. The main work is considered his drama Johanne, which was premiered in 1898 at Christiania Theater. He also published several volumes of time-and theater historically interesting memoirs.
