Schwarzkopf marmoset ( Callithrix nigriceps )

The Schwarzkopf marmoset ( Callithrix nigriceps or Mico nigriceps ) is a primate of the family of marmosets.

Features

Schwarzkopf marmoset, like all marmosets relatively small primates. They reach a body length of about 21 centimeters and a tail length of 33 centimeters. The weight is about 370 grams. Their silky fur is predominantly brown in color, the front and hind legs are orange - yellow, the tail is black. The head and shoulder region are gray-brown, the top of the head and the face are black. As with all marmosets are located on the fingers and toes (except the big toe ) claws instead of nails.

Distribution and habitat

Schwarzkopf marmosets inhabit a small area in the Amazon basin in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Its distribution area is located east of the Rio Madeira and west of the Rio dos Marmelos. Their habitat are rainforests, where they tend to stay in secondary forests and densely planted with undergrowth forest edges.

Way of life

These primates, like all marmosets diurnal and arboreal. They move on all fours or by jumping. Presumably they live like all marmosets in groups that are organized around a mature couple and in which the father and the other group members participate actively in the rearing of the young. Their diet consists primarily of tree sap. But they are all marmosets adjusted as thanks to their specialized teeth in the lower jaw, with which they can gnaw holes in the tree bark.

Endangering

The degree of hazard of this type is not known. Parts of their range are threatened by forest clearing, hunting seems to play no role. The IUCN lists the species under "too little data available " ( data deficient ).
