Black History Month

The Black History Month is celebrated in Canada and in the United States each year in February.

The Black History Month was preceded by the " Negro History Week ", which was celebrated in the second week of February. This celebration of black history movement in the United States was initiated in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, which he wanted to make the general public aware of the contribution of African Americans to the history of their country carefully. Woodson chose February because were born in this month Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and Langston Hughes. Establishing time of Black History Month the history and traditions of the black population was barely covered in history books. The representation of blacks in history books was limited to their lower social status.

Many black radical / nationalist groups such as the Nation of Islam have, the Black History Month criticized.

In the UK, Black History Month is celebrated in October.
