Black (horse)

A black horse is a horse whose mane, tail and coat are black.

Etymology

The black horse owes its name to the raven, a black bird - so he is a " raven " horse.

Appearance

The classic black horse has both black long hair and black fur. Hooves and eyes are left aside badge, dark. In addition to the " constant " centimes, in every season black fur have (gloss black horses or blue centimes), there are also summer black horses that get a brownish or reddish fur in the winter, and winter centimes which or in the summer a rather brownish, greyish ( carbon black horses ) reddish fur bear.

Possible confusion

Carbon foxes, Black Brown and Smoky blacks can be so dark that you could keep them for cents, even though they are genetically no centimes.

  • In centimes mane, tail and back are usually faded the most. The area around the eyes, the mouth and the stomach are really black, if there are no markings are visible.
  • For black and brown legs, mane and tail are usually distinctly darker than the body. The eyes, the area in front of the point of attachment of the hind leg and sometimes the mouth, however, are brown recognizable.
  • Carbon Foxes are on the back usually no brighter than your belly.

Genetics

Genetically considered is the black color of the melanism of the horse. There are two different ways that color can occur.

Recessive black color: the normal Rappe

In order for a horse to rapping is, it must be on the Agoutilocus twice the recessive allele a have for the black color and the Extension locus at least once have the dominant allele E, allows the black color of mane and tail.

Dominant black color

There are at Arab a gene for a dominant black color, that is attributed to the extension locus. A horse that carries this gene once, so it is heterozygous for this is, independently of the other genes on extension and Agoutilocus for centimes.

Influence of other color genes

Horses that have a gene combinations for the black color on agouti and extension locus can be modified by other color genes in the color:

Leucistic color genes have the effect that part of the coat is white, because there the melanocytes, the dye- forming cells that are missing, while other skin areas retain the black color rapping. The weakest distinctive form of leucism leads to white markings. A Piebald is produced when the black color is combined with one of Scheckungsgene. In stichelhaarigem horses a permanent Rappschimmel arises. These animals and similar fur patterns as the Rabicano, the Varnish roan, the Frosty Roan, Sabino some Overos have at least a part of the coat is a mixture of white and black hair. In the dominant white horse is from the black base color nothing more to see since the whole body, the melanocytes of the skin are missing. As light Rappe or Smoky Black horse is called, which was brightened by a simple vorliegendes ( heterozygous ) Cream gene of the black color to a brown. The color of the affected animals ranges from black to dark brown. As a Smoky Cream a horse is referred to, which was brightened by a homozygous vorliegendes Cream gene of the black color to almost white. The Windfarbgen brightens centimes to be gray or brown, some with apple drawing. Affected animals are called Rapp wind colors wind or brown.
