Black Mountain (Kentucky)

The Black Mountain is with 1263m the highest mountain in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is located in Harlan County in the southeast of the state near the border of Virginia and is part of the Cumberland Mountains, a mountain range of the Appalachians. The Black Mountain has the shape of an elongated, forested ridge. The summit itself is in the northeastern part of the mountain and across the road easily accessible. At the top there are some transmission towers, slightly below a radar dome of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The next highest mountain is the High Knob, about 24 km to the east in Virginia.
