Black Stone

The Black Stone (Arabic الحجر الأسود, DMG al - ḥaǧar al - aswad ) is a cult stone at the Kaaba in Mecca, who is revered as part of the ritual circumambulation of the shrine through kissing, touching or pointing with the hand. Since the 19th century, it is interpreted as a meteorite, the true nature is unknown, because the stone was previously never been examined scientifically. There is also speculation it might be a tektites.

The worship of the black stone goes back to the ancient Arabian pagan stone cult. As part of the Islamization of this ritual the stone a supernatural origin was ascribed. Various traditions that are handed down in the name of ʿ Alī ibn Abī Taalib, indicate that Abraham had received the stone from the angel Gabriel. Other companions of the Prophet were the worship of the black stone, however, critical of, seeing it as a relic of the ancient Arabian paganism. Thus, for example of Umar ibn al - Khattab narrated that he kissed the stone with a stay in Mecca, but then said: "I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Messenger of God kissed you, I would not kiss you. "

After the Black Stone had been at the siege of Mecca made 683 from a catapult projectile and broken into pieces, Abdallah ibn az- Zubayr had provided him with a silver bezel. In the year 931 the Black Stone was abducted by the Ismaili Qarmatis to Bahrain; only 951 he returned ( to teaching the Ismaili Fatimids also ) to Mecca.
