The Blackfriars Railway Bridge ( to 1937 St Paul's Railway Bridge ) is a railway bridge over the River Thames in London. It forms the main entrance to the Blackfriars railway station in the district of Blackfriars on the western boundary of the City of London.

First bridge

In 1860 the railway company London, Chatham and Dover Railway ( LC & DR) had been given permission to extend their range of Beckenham from as far as Ludgate Hill in the City of London. As the architect John Cubitt immediately adjacent to the future building built the road bridge at the same time, it also the planning of the railway bridge was transferred. He designed a five - squared wrought-iron lattice bridge which was supported by cast iron columns. The bridge had four tracks and was opened in 1864. Her name was initially similar to the adjacent railway station St Paul's Railway Bridge.

Second bridge

The increasing rail traffic overwhelmed the building soon. To relieve therefore 1884-1886 by engineers John Wolfe - Barry and Henri Marc Brunel few meters east of the existing bridge was built a second. The bridges were in 1937 with the renaming of the main-line station at Blackfriars also renamed and re- referred to as Blackfriars Railway Bridge.

Demolition of the first bridge

Middle of the 20th century was no longer enough, the strength of the older part of the railway bridge for modern trains, so that as of 1971 only the bridge from 1886 was still being used. The older bridge was demolished in 1984 to the brick piers with cast-iron columns. Only on the south bank remained the solid support with the emblem of the restored historic Railway Company LC & DR exist.

Integration into the Blackfriars Station

The piers of the old bridge were reused as part of the Thameslink program. You will carry along with the newer bridge the extended platforms of the station Blackfriars. Both bridges are provided with a roof with solar panels.
